The Love of Sports is More than Being Entertained

February 10th, 2010

We love our sports and becoming a fan of any particular sport gives us a feeling of  belonging.  It is also one area of life that is unencumbered by the world's serious issues.  Yet, sports embodies attributes we hold so dear; competition, perseverance, endurance, winning, working together as a team, overcoming adversity and defeat, not to mention entertaining.

However, sports is much more than just an entertaining event.  The lessons that athletes and teamwork teach us are priceless.  For one, just discussing sports can make a friend or two.  As we talk about our favorite team, athlete or sporting event, we look past race, gender, politics, religion, crime and war.  Yes, for  that moment we are equal; we are just sports fans.

Moreover, most of us would not want a world where sports was not part of our everyday lives. The life lessons that athletes and teamwork teach us are applied to many areas of society; from early childhood development to major corporations.  These lessons show us that we can succeed against the tallest of odds; and that's more than entertainment.
